Mt. Biking.
By the way if you are having a hard time giving up your summer activities like Mt. Biking, head out to Gooseberry Mesa in Utah just south of Zion National park where you’ll find a 20 mile plus network of trails to challenge you in a mix of Moab and classic desert riding. The winter nights are chilly but that’s preferable to the Summer’s searing 100 degree plus temps-go to bicyclesunlimited.com for details!
Out West
Arches national park in Utah has over 2600 sandstone arches, but back in August one of the largest and highest, the 70 foot-wide Wall Arch caved in, showing that these geological wonders are mortal and susceptible to time and the environmental changes that are taking place on our planet!
The park rangers say that others could topple soon, depending on gravity, fractures in the rocks, the elements, etc. So, we recommend that you take a trip out west and get to know these remarkable structures of nature, and by the way, take your bike because it is a real hoot traveling across these arches on wheels!
The park itself is five miles north of Moab on highway 191 and for more information check in at nps.gov/arch!
Point of Interest
In the department of really extreme adventures, how about cruising the Antarctic in a Lotus Concept Ice vehicle, a cock-pit that is set on three skis, powered by a super charged BMW 1150 biofuel engine, and because of it’s lightweight, around 800 pounds, and it’s independent suspension, the CIV as it’s been named, can cruise over Antarctica’s bumpy ice dunes and with a built in, ground-penetrating radar system, it detects crevasses and thin ice ahead of time!Currently you can’t hop on one of these unless your part of the inaugural run, set to take place with the 3,000 mile Moon-Regan TransAntarctic Expedition, intended to raise awareness of global-warming!

Winter Hiking
We’re getting into winter hiking although you’d never know it with the temps that we’ve been experiencing lately, however things are changing and the hike I’m going to talk about today involves an elevation gain of more then 3,000 feet.
The Maine Outdoor Adventure Club is leading a progressive hike up Mt. Eisenhower in the Presidential White Mt. range of New Hampshire coming up on Saturday. Eisenhower is around 4,760 feet with a bald summit and the last quarter mile of this 7 mile round trip hike is fully exposed to the elements so dress for the weather, full winter gear including face and eye protection, crampons or creepers, winter boots and you may need snowshoes! The hike will originate at the beginning of the Crawford path and you’ll summit from there. You’ll meet at a pre-determined spot in Fryeburg, Maine and to get specifics including information on your leader, go to MOAC.org or call 207-775-MOAC!
Extreme adventures.
In the extreme running department the North Face Endurance Challenge, organizers have been holding 50 mile runs across the country. Coming up on December 6th, it’s the Grand Finale in the Marin Headlands, north of San Francisco with 100 foot climbs and difficult drops, but spectacular scenery for the roughly 1,000 runners that will make the attempt, and if your not up for this extraordinary outdoor challenge, then they’ll also offer a 10-K and half marathon. Go to thenorthface.com for all the details!
